In line with the continuing implementation of changes to training procedures for Coastguard Rescue Officers, Instow Coastguard
team members will shortly begin training in cliff rescue techniques. This will allow team members to act as effective back
up to the cliff rescue teams at Hartland, Westward Ho! and Croyde and enable transfer of crew members between Instow
and Westward Ho! when required.
Members of the public frequently ask what is the Coastguard policy on collection of expired flares.
To clarify, boatowners may bring their expired pyrotechnics to the Coastguard station on Tuesday evenings between 1900
and 2100. We will store them in a locked amunition box and they will be correctly disposed of by our colleagues in the military.
Please do not leave flares outside the doors of the station whilst it is unmanned as they are a fire hazard and may be picked
up by local children.
If you find a pyrotechnic on the beach, leave it alone, dial 999 and call the Coastguard. We will take the
appropriate action.
Never be tempted to fire an expired pyrotechnic, including smoke markers. This is very dangerous and can result in severe
injury.
It is an offence to fire a red distress flare unless you are involved in an emergency situation and may attract severe
penalties.
